The best thing you’ve ever done for me, is to help me take my life less seriously, it’s only life after all.
~ Indigo Girls
Sometimes the stress this time of year is completely overwhelming. It’s so easy to get consumed by the sales and the discounts and the black-Friday this and the cyber-Monday that. Eeeks…enough to leave you feeling stunned, confused and not “enough.”
We keep our gift buying to a minimum and instead I like to send out personal cards to my dear friends and family. It gives me a chance to reflect on the past year and reach out to those I love.
When I catch myself getting caught up in feeling like I’m “not doing or giving enough”, I snap out of it by reminding myself what truly matters this time of year. It’s about connection, love and joy.
And when I remember the fun, I can let go of the stress and enjoy the simple, special moments of the season.
Last year everyone in my immediate family received the Christmas card in the above photo. It was signed, “Love, Kevin, Heather & kids.” Funny thing is, none of us know these people. At first, I didn’t think much of it, until I talked to my mom and sister and they both got the same card, and they, too, had no idea who it was from. Finally, after some investigating, we found out my brother was the culprit. He printed this family photo off the Internet and made it into a holiday card. I thought it was super clever and a really funny idea. I can’t help but laugh every time I see it. It’s hard to remember the gifts I received last year, but I sure remember this card. (Sending out fake cards – with the most ridiculous photos – has become a new family tradition!)
As you wrap up your gift buying, how about throw a white elephant party, or find some silly gifts, or gather the family for a popcorn party and watch The Christmas Story. Sometimes the greatest gifts have nothing to do with all the stuff, but rather it’s the experience and the JOY of laughing and being together.
